Misconceptions are like magical illusions. Take, for example, the trickery of pulling a rabbit from a hat. At first, such a fiasco seems harmless until that killer rabbit goes rabid and rips your flesh off! Okay, now that I’m adjusted, let me cut to the nitty-gritty chase.
Christians going off to college will either have the most splendid, best years of their lives or they’ll enjoy a hellish season of pain. I think that there are five big misconceptions Christian college students enter into academia believing. Whether it was a liberal preacher or overly worried parent who promulgated such lies, students must tackle these issues or else they’ll be smothered.
LIE ONE – TEMPTATIONS ARE FEW.
Many wrongly assume that because they liked the most Christian Facebook pages, temptations will for some odd reason avoid them. The ghastly truth is that temptations are everywhere, which is reason enough to prepare. As my wife said, “Even the food is tempting!” Have you not heard of the “freshmen 15”?
LIE TWO – SATAN WILL BE YOUR CLASSMATE IN EVERY CLASSROOM.
Contrary to lie one’s liberal tilt, lie two dives deep into conservative paranoia, as if the enemy has a monopoly on textbooks and will infiltrate your mind! Although Satan is real, he’s been defeated! So enjoy your biology class, silly.
LIE THREE – NON-CHRISTIANS ARE STUPID.
Unfortunately, many Christians roar around spewing Romans 1 and 2 without placing them in context with Romans 3. As God’s redeemed, we’re to be grateful, humbled and honored that He’s saved us. To overly criticize non-Christians as idiotic when they’re actually blind is, well, idiotic. So next time you’re flustered because your friend can’t get God’s words like you do, you wildly cocky Christian, picture them with a tightened blindfold over their eyes of understanding. They can’t see!
LIE FOUR – SECULARISM IS TOO SMART FOR GOD.
It’s not that secularism is too smart for God, but that, perhaps, you’re too dumb for secularism. And I mean that with intense love for you. Don’t hysterically assume your professor is absolutely right when he says, “God’s not real. The Bible is false. Christians are dumb,” and things like these. Instead, assume the opposite, because there is a treasure of philosophically solid, Godly wisdom to combat false teaching. You simply have to search it out.
BIG LIE FIVE – JESUS IS COWERING AWAY IN FEAR.
God’s Spirit, who raised Jesus from a dirty death, is the same Spirit He has commissioned to do robust gospel work on His behalf. By the Holy Spirit, Christ is continuing to rescue seemingly irredeemable souls, heal crushed spirits and excite followers for His fame. It’s grand.
If you’re interested in college being the worst years of your Christian walk, do nothing with or for Christ. The ivory halls of academia will shine that much more brilliantly, though, if you simply walk with Jesus and His people. DON’T STOP BELIEVING.
